The REDress Project

March 16, 2019

Started by the artist Jaime Black, The REDress Project draws attention to the violence perpetuated on Indigenous women and girls. The dresses pictured were donated and were displayed at the National Museum of the American Indian through the month of March 2019. “The dresses evoke absence, serving as spectral reminders of the women and girls missing because of acts of violence.”

Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian

The National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) officially opened their door on September 21, 2004, after years of research and artifact collection. It is the first national museum dedicated solely to Native Americans and their stories. Approximately 20,000 indigenous people, the largest ever gathering of such, attended the inaugural opening in Washington, D.C.
